Napoleon’s Very Own Corsair – Mural

World War II had just ended and Napoleon High School had one of the top Industrial Arts programs around.  What could the school get their hands on to help students learn?  How about a F4U Corsair fresh from the US Navy!  Teacher Lewis Miller requested the plane – was approved – received some financial help from a local businessman, then had to get the Corsair into Napoleon to the old High School from it’s landing spot north of town.  Mr. Miller’s students helped direct the 2 mile drive down Oakwood Avenue for the plane and “taxied” it into place on Webster Street.  It is a story still talked about today!

Becky Shepard painted this vignette of the Corsair heading into town – the mural is located at 719 N. Perry Street in downtown Napoleon.  Stop and relive some unique history!

Herb Huddle was one of Mr. Miller’s students and graciously donated to this project so we can remember this special time.  Herb wrote a short book telling the full story of how the Corsair came to town – if you’d like to read the story FIND IT HERE
